We offer a wide range of professional foot treatments at our medical foot health clinic at the Wellness Centre at Castle Quay.

As a qualified foot practitioner Garel will help you avoid medical foot issues with regular medical pedicures to include treatments for corns, callouses, verrucas, ingrowing toenails and fungal nails where required.

Regular Medical Pedicures

foot pedicure and a daisy

Our Medical Pedicures include a warm foot soak, foot examination, treatment of issues if required, nails clipped and filed, followed by filing of hard skin where needed. Finishing with foot cream and foot rub.

We recommend medical pedicures every 4 to 6 weeks so that the chances of your nails developing fungi and other infections are reduced. Also, the exfoliation that takes place during the appointment will remove any dead skin cells and encourage new cell growth, leaving your nails stronger and healthier.

Corns and Calluses

Corns and calluses are caused by pressure or rubbing of the skin on the feet. For example, from:

callus on foot sole and corns on toes

Verrucas

Verrucas are a type of wart that affect the bottom of the feet caused by papillomavirus (HPV) which is a viral infection that affects the epithelial cells in the skin of the foot, making them over-grow and thicken, causing small rough lumps known as papules.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are one of the most common nail problems encountered in podiatry. A general part of the ingrown toenail occurs when the nail plate grows into the periungual skin and causes inflammation and infection.

Toenail fungus

Toenail fungus is a common infection of the nail. It begins as a white or yellow-brown spot under the tip of your toenail. As the fungal infection goes deeper, the nail may discolour, thicken, and crumble at the edge.

The most effective treatment for toenail fungus is Laser therapy as it penetrates the nail and generates heat at the site of infection beneath the nail plate. The fungal cells are then destroyed before your healthy cells are damaged. It is pain free and all you will feel is a warm sensation at your nail.

Foot Pain

Metatarsalgia, literally metatarsal pain and colloquially known as a stone bruise, is any painful foot condition affecting the metatarsal region of the foot. This is a common problem that can affect the joints and bones of the metatarsals.

Damage caused by toenail polish

Many nail polishes are made from harmful chemicals that can seep into your bloodstream through your toenail beds and when the polish is removed the nails can be discoloured and yellowish. Also, the acetone found in nail polish remover can dry out your nails and cause them to crack or peel. When nails are in a fragile state there is a higher risk of bacterial and fungal infection.

Children's Foot Problems

Tips for Parents:

How to Spot Kids' Foot Problems

Inspect your child's feet regularly for changes in the skin of the feet as well, especially after your child has been playing barefoot or in socks. Check for cuts, bruises, colour change, rashes, or odour.

Children are also prone to fungal or viral infections, so foot hygiene is very important. Many older children may ignore foot pain or try to shake it off, so it's best to be vigilant about any changes in walking or behaviour and if in doubt bring them in to see Garel for advice.
